Default RE: full-strut decoy

I choose not to use a full strut decoy but use a jake decoy with a my hen once in awhile. Otherwise i use 2 different posing hens. It depends if you should put out that jake or tom decoy on whether you are hunting the king of the woods, or a less dominant tom.

For instance, one with a jake and 2 hens out, I had a huge dominant gobbler run in and look the jake right in the eyes and spur a few holes in it before I shot him. But in quite a few cases I have had turkeys gobble like crazy and race in, then see the decoys and leave. These are the subordinent gobblers that have been whooped earlier in the season by the big birds and don't want to get into that again so they chicken out and leave to stay out of another fight.

So with a jake you can have good luck with mostly all turkeys, but with a strutting decoy, it's mainly for the dominant turkey and don't be surprised for smaller turkeys to run from it.
