RE: Bow hunting Elk in Rimrock, Wa
I went back to rimrock 9-17-04. My dad went a couple days before me. He called and said that he saw 3 bulls but never had a shot. the first bull was a 5x5 with a cow that came straight at him, but then headed off into some thicker woods. the second bull he called in with a cow call. It only took a few seconds for him to come running in. He was a very thick 4x4 at 12yards but only gave my dad a neck shot so he didnt take it. the last bull was a 6x6 that my dad jumped on accident because he fell. My dad kept saying how steep and wet it was. I was laughing till I saw the area he was hunting in.
On saturday the 18th I woke up to bulls bugling. This got us pretty excitted because we never heard anything the days before. that afternoon we were cow calling 3 different bulls into our area.Unfortunatly, we never did get them close enough. It was definatly the most fun I have had hunting elk. there is nothing like hearing that bull bugle less than 100yards from you.
The next day we never heard another bugle. Talked to 2 other hunters who hadnt seen anything. I was also looking for some deer but never saw one. On our drive home we saw a hunter who got his tag filled with a monster nontypical bull. It was the biggest bull I have ever seen.
Hopefully we will get some cows in the late season. My dad was drawn for any buck for rifle up in the pearrygin unit (224) November 1-18 so hopefully he gets his first trophy buck.
