It used to be that the more expensive guns had better wood ...walnut... and if you looked them over could find one with a nice grain and cut checkering.
Savage is usually a "hard wood" stock ( birch) and if it's ckeckered it's pressed.
As far as looks ... I've had many friends that bought pretty guns, and then were affraid to take them into the woods ( didn't want to scratch the stock) so they used a win 94 .30-30. I say get a savage and use it.
