They already know something is not right but can not pinpoint it exactly, by making a sound or call you have just given the game an exact location to key on and it most likely will lead to the fleeing wheeze sounds. Basically you did the only right thing at this point stay motionless and hope they move off or shut up to minimize effect on other animals that maybe near.
