I like to use the small plastic paper clips, they will give you a little more surface area than toothpicks and just throw them in your mouth and once everything gets moist, they come out and you're ready. I would always try to wash with tap water after each use, if you can. Paul is right, its hard to beleive just how hard it is to tear even a 3mil piece of latex.
