Once I have my climbing stick or steps up and secure, I take up a pulley and hook it to the top rung or the very top of the stick. It's a rope pulley, very light, they are sold at WalMart(2 for about $10, in with the tie downs). They come with a twisted 8' rope,but I put a 1/4" braided 50' rope in it. It has a stop on it too, holds the stand at your desired height. While on the ground I pull the stand up, locks at the height, then I climb up. Slick as can be. You won't feel like you've been beat around the neck and shoulders with a bat!!
