Chimo, I shoot hardwood dowels all the time. Ramin. I use self nocks and put a 1/8" pin across the dowell just below the self nock. Glue it in with titebond. Ramin is very tuff and easy to work. I can buy them here in 4 foot lengths and lots of the 3/8 ones spine 70 ponds and higher. I can get hard maple sometimes as well but they want quite a bit more money for the maple.

You could barrel taper the shafts to keep the weight down.
