Last year I shot a 4x4 bull elk. It was a heart/lung shot. He went about 10 yard and laid down. I waited about 15-20 minutes before I walked up. He tried to get up but did't have the strength. Two shots with a .45 to put him down for good (I carry a side arm). I am always careful when I approach a "dead" animal.
