just an idea...you might want to go along the inside and outside edge of the strip with a handheld sprayer and hit the vegetation with 2% roundup. i think it would help the stuff you planted that's right along the borders grow a little better because there will be no shade and nothing to take the moisture away. it's easy to do. just my 2 cents.
