Default RE: apple orchird

Ok guys I have 90 apple trees in full production about 400 bushels a year. In the summer this time of the year the deer are brave and infest the orchard. Had 2 - 10 pointers and a six in last night. All in pretty velvet. I have been chasing them and a bunch of does out for weeks. I shoot bottle rockets at them. This happens this time of the year every year. Now the bad news, the first week in September and the first good wind in early September as I have learned drops the acorns. The deer disappear during the day in the orchard and go for the acorns. They do come in at night but usually it is well after dark. This is just when they start to use different routes in the adjacent woods so it is hard to get close for Bow shots. But the orchard does keep them in the area and I generally get them in the November 1 rifle season. By the way I do have crop damage permits but elected to let the 10 pointers grow to full antlers this year. I do have a good friend down in Jersey who hasn’t got a deer in 30 odd years so he is coming up to take one when they mature a bit more. And yes they do taste better. The apple flavor is very noticeable. I can smell it when I cut them up.
