As far as spooking deer is concerned, 1. the deer have no idea where I am going, and 2. It is unlikely that the deer I am hunting is going to be in my path to the stand.

On safety, not only could you be mistaken for game, I have busted my arse pretty good while walking out under a 3/4 moon thinking it was light enough to see. Small, but very sturdy stumps can be very hard to see I low light.
