Ah yes, a true sign of a real hunter. I have done both to determine the utmost freshness. Sometimes it can be difficult due to the moisture content if its after a winter thaw or a fresh rain, but usually if rescent elk have been in the area its pretty easy to tell by the amount of other signs left in the area. I even get down in the beds to smell and look for hair to make sure that its elk, or whatever to idenify the animal that made it. I am a firm believer that you got to know the animal your hunting and you do what it takes when in there territory.
