Garmin GPS12. Great unit with lots of features, probably more than I need. The eTrex is a great basic unit; my friend has one and it is really easy to use.

GPS is NOT a substitute for a map and compass. When I first got my GPS I used it a lot and now I only occasionally use it to verify my compass/map directions when I am looking for the shortest route back to camp or to a certain marked waypoint. It has saved a lot of walking.
