My best was a walker. She had a good cold nose and stayed on the same deer instead of finding fresh tracks and taking off.
Be careful, around here you have to keep them on a leash when tracking wounded/killed game.
Beagles work well too. My friend uses a fiest.
I'd get a hunting pup and train him from 6 weeks old until forever.
