You did what you could to find the deer, that is exactly what you should do. You did take a long shot 180 yards using a lighter calibur rifle. I only shoot my 30-06 out to 100 yards since that is what I shoot at the range. After that, how much the bullet drops I don't know so I don't shoot it at higher yards at the range.
Also, in PA where I hunt, I don't usually have shots over 100 yards.

If I could make a suggestion, if I were going to use this rifle for deer, I would keep my shots closer to me like 50 to 100 yards, just a suggestion. After that, I would limit my shots. I'm not that familar with that calibur but I thought that was mainly for varmits like coyotes. I don't know.

I do have a friend that uses a 270 for deer and it shoots great.

Do what you must but keep in mind what your limitations are and this is a lesson learned.
