It is nearly impossible to tell where the deer was hit for sure. I do have a question for you though. Was the rounds you were using, reloads? The reason I am asking is that my sister was using Sierra reloads and in her 243 they were breaking apart on impact causing more of a schrappnel wound than an actual bullet wound. She hit a deer behind the front shoulder and we found pieces of the round from its neck to its guts. The round she fired grazed a rib on the way it and thats what blew the round apart.
