hey kamp.. i currently own a russian saiga in 7.62x39 , a nagant m38 in 7.62x54r and a
m1903 in 30.06..for hunting as for the rifles that i have owned.. 2 ruger 7 mags , a remington .243 ,a .300 winchester mag , a .300 weatherby mag ,3 savage 30.06's , a ruger .223 , a romanian sar-1 , savage .270,
winchester 30-30, so i have experienced the gammet of calibers... as for my vote ... a 30.06 is the best all around...if you hand load you can go from 100 grain hornady
short jackets(2004 hornady catalog) to 220 grain rn pro hunters (2004 sierra catalog) if dont hand load you can go down to 55 grain remington accelerators[8D]
(remington catalog) all the way up to 220 grain round nose factory loads.....
DO TO THE FACT THAT I HAVE A 30.06 IN MY CLOSET I NEED NOT ANOTHER HUNTING RIFLE.......THE 55 GRAIN TO 220 GRAIN COVERS ALL OF GODS ANIMALS...!! PREFERABLY

The caliber only matters to a certain extent. I could make the same claim about my .280. It's by far the most accurate gun I've ever hunted with. But that doesn't mean it will be for the next guy. And I still don't use it for elk. I want the elk to go down on the spot I hit it, not running down into some hell hole. I have a moose on video that had to be shot 4 times with .270 in the vitals before it even acted like it was hurt.
Being confident with the biggest caliber possible is the key. There is no "best" cartridge. I could load 100 gr to 220 in my .300 if I want. Whoopeee! Does that make the cartridge better? No.
.30-06 are versitile yes, but no more so than any other cartridge, they are just much more popular so there are more trinkets available for them. They are popular because they were a military cartridge..much like the .223.
