In competitive target archery many (not all) shooters focus on the dot/pin, reson being the dot in your 6X scope covers sometime the entire gold circle, so you don't see the X you're aiming at anyway. Also the lens, as it magnifies the target, magnifies the movement of your bow, trying to hold tiny dot/pin at the X will drive you nuts and may cause torque.
When hunting you're better off to pic a spot on the animal, don't loose it, and rely on almost automatic peep/sight alignment. "don't shoot at the animal, shoot at the spot"
I personally like my peep set up so as I anchor at full draw my peep encircles the round housing of my sight without any effort on my part. I find it more difficult to center the pin in the peep, that's why I use hunting sights with round housing.
