Had the same problem till I got my Paint Ball gun going. Won't hurt the dog but does sting. The rednecks may get the hint seeing that there dog is painted and makes an easy target. Use different colors so they know it is happening more than once.
Catch and release at it's finest. I now go looking (Hunting) for the dog in my yard and he isn't around as much!
