today we had a half day of school like we did yesterday and we did nothing yesterday so i decided since it was going to be beautiful out i would go hunt some turks...woke up 445 am....out the door at 5...at my spot at 515 and walking up over the giant hill i had to walk up then down....get there at about 530...im inbetween 2 fields where some trees were left to grow thinking of where i should go(i know they roost right there in the woods across a little field) then one went off...i couldnt believe it..it was EARLY...but i guess the almost full moon made them go off early...he was to the left...i stand by a tree for about 20 mins seeing where all the birds are and what one i want to set up on....well the one i heard went off countless times with other birds in the same area...they were to the left...so i snuck out into the big hill field and snuck to where they were....i didnt walk 50 yards but they were 10 times louder then when i was over in the treeline...and it was way to thick to get in there so i had to think fast....i snuck over to where i was and went down to the woodlineand went to the left corner of the field...i snuck in and went in 15yards and set up....they were going nuts as i walked in....sounded like a jake short gobbling then 2 birds full gobbling but it was hard to tell they were all going off at the same time...im sitting there with these birds roosted right infront of me...going nuts...then i could see everything clearly so i gave a few soft tree yelps and did a fly down with my hat...they went nuts...couple minutes later i cluck and start scratching in the leaves...they went nuts again..then all fell silent....i waited a while then about 610 i did a short series of yelps then started purring and clucking...they didnt seem to like the yelping but the clucking drove them nuts....i put down my call and figured id wait till i know they hit the ground...but they were silent after that...then i saw one soar out of the trees landing to my left....perfect...i get my gun up and am waiting...never saw it again....then im sitting there waiting for it to show and 5 minutes later or so i seen a turkey...and a beard flopping all around....my arm got tired so my gun wasnt pointed directly at him..and it was open...i nudged it over and got on him...he got nervous and started putting..and bobbing his head trying to figure me out....i couldnt tell how long the beard was but it was flopping when he walked and not jutting out like a jakes so i let him have it....he blew backwards and the rest is history....he was with a friend...i couldnt tell what he was maybe even a hen...it looked smaller but when my bird putted it snuck out and i caught it with the corner of my eye....he was probably 25-30yards out....easy shot for my pattern....hit him with a 3inch bufferer nitro mag with 1 7/8 oz of "hard polished" #4s....he carried a 9inch beard and 1 inch spurs....not a monsted but for my second spring gobbler, 3rd turkey id say hes a nice one...my second long beard..the other was a fall hen...dad taught me to turkey hunt since i was 12...im 17 now...this is my 6th spring...every year i passed on birds not thinking i could take the shot or waiting for a better one and then the birds snuck out....last year was the first time i ever hunted alone and i got mine the second day....this year i was alone once again....first thing i dad when i got to the truck was call dad....hes proud of me....says im a chip off the old block and that someone must taught me well....i told him ya...you did a good job training me....well...just thought id tell you guys my story....good luck to those who have a tag left and congrats to you that tagged a bird already....now...to get dad a bird......my season isnt exzactly over....im done carrying around a heavy gun...but i will still hunt with dad....maybe take friends out.....i took tons of pics...when i get them developed ill be sure to post them......sorry for the long post....im still excited!
