It depends on the situation as to what works best....so is the case with everything.
At first light an owl call is usually what I use to get a bird to give away his position. Some mornings the birds just won't be gobbling much, on a day like that you want to set up in a spot, usually a field or open road that you know the gobblers feed and strutt in. I usually make soft tree yelps, which are just real soft quiet yelps usually 5-6 notes long. I also cluck a little bit right at first light. If I am comfortable with it, I will then do a flydown cackle which is a series of several notes and beat my hat up and down on the ground to sim a fly down.
Once I know the bird is on the ground I won't do much talking at first light. Usually as he gets closer I will just cluck and purr and scratch the leaves. Just common content turkey noises. Thats what did the job on Saturday.
