RE: why should trapping be legal?
Heater, here is a round about answer. 20 years ago, the fir trade was at it's peak. Prices were high so it was profitable to trap. Trappers kept the population of yotes, foxes, and cats at a manageable level. Trappers kept predators down in breeding areas of the ducks, so the Duck population was also at an all time high. Through proper management of predators, habitat for game animals is benefited. Prices droped through the efforts of groups like PETA, who have made it un-popular to wear fir. Less people are trapping, so predators have increased in population. Right now in Nevada we have an over population of coyotes, this has caused our deer population to stagnate. The government spends 1 million dollars a year to kill 100,000 coyotes by air. I think that the money would be better spent on bounties. Hunters would kill more yotes and cost to the taxpayer would go down. Just some thoughts on the subject.
