RE: What type of knife do you use?
I have 10 or 12 good knives, but the two I use most are both Bucks. I always carry my old BuckLite folder in the woods with me, it really is lightweight and sharpens up fairly easily. My favorite skinner is a Buck fixed blade with the titanium coating on the blade. It is different in that only one side of the blade is sharpened. This allows the titanium to always be the cutting edge. It is "awesome" for skinning deer, and it really holds an edge. The biggest drawback is that it takes about an hour to get the edge back when it finally does get dull. It has the rubber handle which does make it a little easier to hang on to when your hands get bloody (mainly because of the checkering pattern molded in). I do have a little gut hook knife from Cabela's that I pull out sometimes, and it does help for splitting one open, but that is all I use it for. The T-shaped handle feels odd to me.
