Just to throw out a possibility, some folks believe that BH tipped arrows should be long enough so that if it falls off the rest the BH won't cut into your hand. So, this MIGHT be why the shop said leave em longer.

Of course they could have just not felt like dealing with it too.

I have a 30 inch draw and shoot 28.5 inch arrows.
