kyhillbilly, I agree putting the shot where it has to be is key...however with elk Bullet Construction is a huge key. IMO these are one of the toughest animals to topple and wouldn't leave anything to chance by using a marginal bullet or caliber for that matter.
Oldguy with the 3006 you have a good deal of selection and range for bullets acceptable for an elk hunt (nosler parts, win. failsafe, speers grandslam, trophy bonded, swift aframes, barnes x, etc). Start out with the 180's and see how they shoot, my best advice is go with the best bullet for the job that includes the one that gives you both solid construction and accuracy.
