I have to assume that with a heavier arrow momentum will actually increase down range in certain instances.
Based on what Arthur posted above this cannot be true. Speed is a factor in the momentum equation and since we loose speed the second the arrow leaves the bow then momentum continues to decrease the farther away the arrow is from the point of launch.
My guess on your better penetration is that the arrows were stabilized better at the longer distance.
