Utah also limits MZ scopes to 1X. I've used a burris 1X for the last 5 years. My observations are as follows: It has been dead dependable on game, even on an antelope at 229 yards. At the target range, the cross hears are heavy enough that precision shooting is a challenge. For example, although the gun groups into 1 moa with a high power scope, the heavy cross air/no magnifcation limit me to about 3 moa groups. I have found that a 6" florescent organge target dot is the best aiming tool. For hunting, there has been no downside. For precision target shooting or load development, I put a 3X9 scope on (I use leupold QD mounts). I have shot my cousins swift 1X--it does have finer cross hairs but the adjustments are a hassle and it doesn't seem to hold its zero. I toyed with a red dot sight with a 3 moa dot. Ultimately I concluded that Murphy's law just about guaranteed I would forget to turn the sight off or the batteries would otherwise run out when I could least afford it. Just my luck I guess. I clearly prefer the 1X scope to open sights (including peep sights), and it has been more than adequate for even longish (229 yds) shots. The scope has seemed easier for my "aging" eyes.
