dpv, I stand behind my vote for the 35Rem over a 30-30. At the close range that these rounds are designed to be used the larger, heavier bullet kills with more authority than a 30-30. Ballistic numbers alone don't tell the whole story of any cartridge, whether it's a 30-30, 35Rem or 30-06 for that matter. If someone needs to shoot past 150yds or so, then why are they carrying a 30-30 in the first place? If you're hunting an area that is mostly thick stuff but has a few spots for a 150-200yd shot then something like a 308 carbine is without doubt a better choice. If someone likes the 30-30 that's OK with me but I feel their are better choice's available for any type hunting that can be named.
