For best all around home defense, a pump-action shotgun is hard to beat. Just the sound of a round being chambered can be enough for the intruder to rethink his intentions. If the shotgun is not an option, I'd also have to go with the 357 mag in a revolver or the .45 for an auto with either one loaded with Hydra-Shoks.
