It was a long time ago when I did mine, but if I remember right, after you applied the stuff, you took steel wool and sanded it smooth again because each coat you put on made the barrel a little darker, but it also actually rusts the barrel a little each time. I still have some somewhere in the house. I should find it and give my old Renegade a new coat or two.. hope the rifle turns out nice the way you want it to
