You may want to take a good look at the North American Archery Group line of bows. The group consists of Jennings, Buckmaster, Fred Bear, Golden Eagle, etc... Prices on many of their bows are usually signficantly cheaper than many of the pro shop only lines that you see talked about here on a regular basis. One in particular I may suggest checking out is the Jennings Rackmaster. Very similar in specs and design to the Mathews FX, Bowtech Stalker, Hoyt Havoc, etc... but priced around $300-$350.
