Default Minerals - when should I put them out?

I hunt in Northern Wisconsin and the past few years I've been putting out mineral licks and bags of loose mineral for the deer on our property. I haven't done it as a baiting technique but more to try and help the pregnant does out and the bucks for better antler growth. I've been doing this in the early spring after the snow melts (March-April). Does this sound like it would be the best time? I don't have large budget for this so it's pretty much a one time shot at different points around the property. I don't follow up as the piles diminish. Maybe I'm not even doing any good if I can't keep replenishing them??? Or maybe the whole mineral thing is a bunch of you know what and I'm not doing any good at all. Any thoughts from anyone???
