As a backup bear gun that can also knock down a big hog and still be cheap there's still quite a few military .30-06 available. Some are Mausers and locally there's a couple 1917 Enfields for surprising little cash.

Also the 8MM mauser is a fine candidate for the job and they can still be had cheaply.
