Default RE: Grouse, What's the secret to bagging these "fast flyers"

my best advice is get rid of the dog! these birds don't hold, they run or fly! sneak through the woods, just as if you were deer hunting, use #6's all season. hunt the apple orchards, espescially late in the year( like now, if it is open). get rid of the dog!. first thing in the morning, if you have a spot like this, get in the woods, work towards the edges. on sunny mornings, you will find the birds sunning on the edges, so they don't seem to know you are coming. this gives you a nice ground shot, or if you are really lucky, a shot into the field. take them whenver, wherever you can. this ain't pheasent hunting, or quail, this is a real gamebird, that is harder than hell to hit!. check out stone walls, wild grape patches. i have read that a partridge( grouse,? no, they are either " birds", or partridge, never grouse!) will eat 200? different kinds of food, you just have to check their craw when you get one. best bet, though, edges, apple trees, softwoods stands, or the thickest, nastiest garbage you can find. get rid of the dog!! unless you use it solely to retrieve.
