I think it mostly has to do with the ammo availability, ammo and gun price, and the power level of the cartridge. The rifles and ammo cost a goodly bit more than 22cal rimfire rifles, if they aren't on par with the 22CF hypervelocity rifles, and ammo availability in most places is pretty small in variety-it usually costs almost as much or as much as .22-250, .220swift, or .223 ammo, when it's simply not nearly as powerful...so basically you can buy a hornet or a .22-250 and it's ammo for the same price, but with the hornet you get a lot less power/range compared to the others.
I had one, and loved it, but I love my Savage .22-250 a lot more now-that's what I traded it towards, and I've never regretted it.
