Kansas; Your outfitter will/should retrieve any wounded bear for you. Your safety is also their responsibility . As mentioned before, shot placement is critical. The long hair can be deceiving, so aim 1/3 of the way up the chest. Also, be sure you use a blade that will enhance your chance of good penetration. As far as pepper spray goes, you can purchase it in Canada if your are over 18. As long as the wind is not in your face, I guess it'd work. The bush we hunt in is extemely thick out here on the coast, so mostly we go in on retreival with 12g and buckshot. I would ask your outfitter before you worry about bringing a gun along. If you don't need one, then avoid the hassle at the border.
