I think the .308 is perfect it makes a fine short range gun and will reach out there to the distances you might need. I have personally used mine at 400 (the conditions were right) for a one shot kill. The .243 might be a tad light at those longer distances and more is really overkill for whitetails, certainly for brush hunting.
