This “xxx cartridge burns all of its powder in yy inches of barrel and won’t gain more velocity past zz inches” crap has to go… THE ONLY cartridges for which practical barrel lengths actually find a maxima are 22LR’s.

Quite directly, 458socom DOES gain velocity in barrels longer than 9.5”, even in barrels longer than 20”.

The “recommendations” this guy makes about hunting are the biggest disservice. It’s absolutely asinine to suggest a 458socom will “lack the needed kinetic energy to ensure a clean harvest on a game animal” last 200 yards. A hint for our clueless author - the 458 Socom will push 300-350grn class bullets fast enough to still be over 1,000fps at 500 yards. So you are suggesting a bullet with effectively 50% greater weight hitting at about the same speed as a 45 colt revolver pressed against the animals hide won’t be effective… really dude? By extension then, 45 Colt is NEVER capable of taking game - or 44mag for that matter. C’mon… You could have said the trajectory becomes very difficult to manage, making shot placement a nearly insurmountable challenge beyond 300 yards, but choosing to use kinetic energy as an excuse to limit the 458socom to 200 yards is just bad science, and inexperience.

Get off of Wikipedia for a minute and go handle real firearms in the field.
