I agree with Oldtimr and NoMercy. Actually there are 3 differences: size, energy per pellet and /3 of pellets per load.
As for a pheasant breaking into your home its obvious you've never been hit with a load of #6 birdshot at 10 feet. If you were you likely wouldn't be standing here. That is a very good initial defensive load inside a home and safer for those in other rooms. THAT is the reason it would be my round in the chamber followed by buckshot in an cylinder bored shotgun.
