Looking at new Packs
Hey everyone, as you can figure out I’m looking for experiences with different pack systems. Ultimately my goal if possible is a one pack for all, I’ll explain the details. Up until now I’ve been roughing it with packs, whether it be hunting, camping, hiking, travelling or fishing. I’ve been basically using a waxed canvas rucksack without a frame(military surplus) or a 1700CI Ogio basic backpack. It’s time to upgrade, and with this upgrade I’d like it to work for multiple activities with little downside. Mainly the basics are I’d like a pack/frame system that I can use/modify to work for current day hunts, weekend camping trips, hiking, and travel. These musts will include the ability to have about 60L capacity(minimum, I can/will go more if weight allows), limited bulk, simplicity and to haul as I plan to get more into backpack hunting(3-5 day trips) in upcoming seasons.
So far I’ve kind of narrowed it down to a Mystery Ranch Metcalf or an Eberlestock F1 w/ Batwings(I have dry bags or other packs to expand capacity that will work with the F1), but I’m all ears to other suggestions. Both will be roughly same price range, I really like reviews on the Metcalf, it looks like the more comfortable, durable option, but my main concern would be bulk. It has the capacity, ability to haul, everything I’d need for camping, weekends and backpack hunting. But is it too bulky for the smaller stuff? Example day hunts, ice fishing, hiking, etc. This is where the idea of the eberlestock came in, the F1 with Batwings will be the minimum always setup ready to go, and with the ability to add/remove a larger bag for the extra capacity needed for some activities as mentioned. But from some reviews may come at the cost of slightly inferior comfort/load hauling abilities. Keep in mind here also I’m 6’1, 220lbs and I’m up in Canada. Experiences/suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks
