I do the head spacing a little different but ive been lucky that none of mine needed shims. The biggest deal is start with the longest primer such as a Win209 or Fed209A. If any are oddly short, sort them out and use them for something else. Your "window" is .003-.005 with a max of about .006 crush. That way you wont ever accidentally get it too tight if you change primers. Now days though you may want to start with whatever primers you have the most of. The Lehigh plug works fine with all powders and you dont need mags to ignite BH209.

I got 1 custom plug that will crush longer Win209s to .006 and that same plug will crush a Fed209A to .003. Variations from lot# to lot# of primers can be pretty big so make sure to measure them before doing any head spacing. More recent Win209s might actually be smaller on average than the Feds. They do vary more in the same box and the Feds are a little more consistent in length.
