Navy..... Man I don't want to sound like a jerk, but what the hell are you talking about?? I've lived in northern MN for over 30 years, hunted here for almost 20 and I've been in COLD weather. I have NEVER heard of a tree "popping" from this. Maybe I read it wrong and you are talking about a sound of cracking branches, but trees here don't just blow up. Rifle opener was about -15 degrees and..... no tree popping. If this was true, all the trees would be killed off by now!
I live on Lake of the Woods, and on a clear -35 degree night, you can sure hear the lake popping from the ice. Ice expansions/contractions scare alot of ice fishermen. (which is normally safe unless ice is thin)
