I use a pocket sized sharpening steel I carry with me most always. It isn't any bigger than a pocket ink pen, it has maybe a 3/16 inch diameter. It also works wonders for a quick chain saw touch up.
I actually sharpen any blade seldom, maybe twice a year and in between I use the steel.
I use a permanent marker on the blade edge, which makes it very easy to see what kind of cut/angle you have. Most times the blade only needs a little touch up. All of my blades will shave the hair off of my arm and I keep them that way.
IMO the best way is to touch up the blade often with a steel and avoid cutting too much metal when you do have to use a stone. IMO people overdo the sharpening thing on most occasions.
