Halford was a keen advocate of vaccination following its introduction by Jenner in 1798. As president of the RCP he became ex‐officio president of the National Vaccine Establishment, a role which he pursued with enthusiasm. So highly did he rate vaccination as a means of avoiding or modifying smallpox he was instrumental in appointing Dr Jenner as physician extraordinary to King George IV.
