Gold Dot bullet is designed to be used for 'personal protection'. A question surfaced as to whether this bullet could be used as a mild recoil hunting load. This morning it was tested by shooting it through a trap consisting of carpet, then plywood, then water jugs, then phone books. The powder charge was 80 grain Blackhorn. The distance to the trap was 25 yard. Five fresh bullets from the box were weighed. Three of them weighed more than 210 grain; two of them weighed less than 210 grain. Recoil was light.
At impact the front jug was blown into 2 pieces. One piece can be seen flying almost all the way to the camera. The other piece flew about 15 feet the opposite direction. The second jug was nearly split in two. Then the bullet bounced off the third jug, and ended up on the snow 2' to the side of the horse, and slightly forward. The opened bullet weighs 209.7 grain.
