Have you taken care of him after each season? If yes, then I' d definitely ask him. Let him know that you will not harm any trees if that is his hang up. Use all strap on stuff.

Personally though, I don' t allow anyone (except my own hunting partners) to use tree stands on my land more becuase of liability concerns.
