I have never used a range finder to range an animal. However I use one to range landmarks around my stand so if a deer shows up, I know very close how far away they are.

Also I believe in the "one is none" rule.
If it's important, I have 2 with me (a rangefinder is one of those IMO) !
Of course, I am talking about hunting with a rifle.
