308 is the better caliber. 243 is basically a combo varmint/deer caliber and is pretty much worthless if you want to go after anything bigger than deer. 308 would be good for elk etc... as long as you pick your shot and don't try for long range.

I carried a 243 for a couple of years. I like a bullet heavier than 100 gr for bog game. I changed to a 6.5x55 Swedish. Even though it is only a half a millimeter bigger I can get bullets to 160 gr. My understanding is the 6.5 isn't legal in IN but if the 308 is that is what I'd go for since you can get bullets to 180 gr. It doesn't have the case capacitiy for anything heavier.
