Do you need magnification or just aiming? If you just need aiming, then IMO red dots are hard to beat. I'm in my mid 40's and don't need the magnification (yet), and have used a red dot on my 12ga for over 10 years. Unlimited eye relief, allows for off-hand shots, and the illuminated reticle is great for dawn/dusk shots on turkey and deer.

I've had great success with the Bushnell Trophy Red Dot with multi-reticle. Red and green lights, with 4 different options (3 MOA dot, 10 MOA dot, crosshair, or ringed dot (dot inside a 65 MOA circle). You can get it for $75-100, and comes with Weaver style rings.
