Most predator hunters in the USA buy their calls, rather than making their own. Guys DO make their own "fox whistles" or other homemade predator calls, but not that often.

The guys that build their own will vary between shotgun base "button" styles, the Tenterfields from can lids, some tube type howlers with pill bottles and rubber gloves, and some harp style.

Most of us buy factory predator calls off of the shelf. With the late 2000's/early 2010's boom in predator calling in the USA, there are predator calls on shelves at every store that sells hunting gear - even Walmarts, heck, even some gas stations!

Then there are others of us that suffer from a debilitating condition of custom call addiction. I started "accumulating" or "collecting" coyote calls about 10yrs ago and have somewhere just under 200 calls to date, the majority of them (2/3 to 3/4 of them) being custom calls. I have open reed, closed reed, and latex diaphragms; calls that make sounds from baby rodent squeals up through deer bawls and wolf howls; calls made from antler, horn, acrylics, hippo ivory, domestic woods, and exotic woods; and made by different over 30 different makers in 23 different US states.
